I awoke at five this morning to the sound of Eden crashing into Paul’s nightstand as she fell out of our bed,  into which she crawled last night when Christopher accidentally triggered the house alarm as he opened up the back door to take some pictures of the moon…at midnight.

He had asked permission to use my camera and to take the picture.
I had just crawled into bed and, completely exhausted, said he could, forgetting I had just set the alarm.
People really ought to be filming us, but I am so grateful they aren’t.

I should add that the state of everything is all the more sweet today as, had I posted last night, it could have been titled “Taste of Armageddon”.

Taste of Heaven

October 8, 2008 by Alison Hodgson Leave a Comment

It has been raining off and on all day and I have been writing for a couple of hours.

Typing this, I am sitting on my bed, which was made, but I have tucked myself under the covers and am propped against some pillows.  Books, 3×5 cards for taking notes, papers and pencils are scattered across the comforter.  Jack is sleeping on the floor beside me.  The taste of peppermint lingers from a cup of tea I just drank.  The children are happily, quietly and appropriately occupied.  The house is neat and cozy and Paul should be home soon.
If there was something for dinner I might mistake this for heaven, instead of just a taste of it here on earth.
I wish that filled the stomach.

Started a post today, but didn’t finish it.

I’m busy.  Paul has extra work and a trip looming.  The girls still go to different schools and I still neducate Christopher…sort of.
I’ve exercised a so much today and I’m so tired, but I have raised my standards, so I need to go spruce the house before passing out.
Also, I’m working on a stand up bit for the writer’s conference, my writer’s group sponsors.  I don’t feel the angst of last year, my first time doing  it, probably because I didn’t schedule another speaking gig on an entirely different subject the week before, like I did last year.  I don’t feel stressed, but I need to knuckle down so that what I have to say is tight and entertaining.  It is so fulfilling making people laugh.  Last year I was completely strung out under the stress of “doing stand up” since I am not a comedian.  Now I know that my task is to just tell funny writing stories.  That I can do, whatever you call it.
Today was a really good.  I accomplished a lot and not very much depending on what categories you you might be counting.  And if you had a bird’s eye view of me, depending on when you were looking you might have thought I was wonder woman or the laziest lady in the world.
I was in the cross hairs of grace and works and let me tell you it’s a wondrous place to be.
I want to live there.

A Couple of Kindergarteners

October 6, 2008 by Alison Hodgson 1 Comment

This was taken just a month ago, the evening before the girls’ first day of school.  I asked them to show me their “Kindergarten smiles”.

And they certainly did.
They are doing well and yet both of them want to drop out.  Eden prefers to stay at home and Ren has been disappointed to discover that school’s not as fun as she imagined.
I don’t think there is a word big enough to describe how I feel about these girls, but adore is a good place to start.
