“Mom, do you think Miley Cyrus’ success has gone to her head?”  Lydia asked.

Before I had a chance to answer Eden asked, “What’s sussess in the head?”
“It’s about how people are thinking of themselves as cool -” Lydia began.
“I have that in my head.”  Eden said.
Lydia tried again, “It’s when people get a lot of attention-“
“I get a lot of attention because I’m young!”
We never did decide on Miley Cyrus, but I think we all agreed that, given the same success, it would almost certainly go to Eden’s head.
She’s ready.

A sign that, perhaps, one has not been getting the best sleep:

When your five year old comes into your bedroom at five a.m. to report that “Jackie jumped on my bed and scared me!” and you realize you are relieved that it is so late.

The Police

May 6, 2008 by Alison Hodgson 2 Comments

Today my friend, Dan, stopped by to pick up some things he’d forgotten after his birthday party and stayed for a little chitchat.  Eden sat on my lap coloring while Dan and I talked.  One of our main topics was insomnia as I have been going through a long bout of it and he was operating on a little over an hour’s sleep.

I was moaning about how the smallest thing will wake me up, that Paul can get out of bed and not make a sound, but his absence will wake me.  Dan just shook his head in sympathy.
Eden leaned over and whispered in my ear, “You should talk about that with your husband.”
The girl is protective of, not her Daddy, mind you, but, my husband and far be it from me to challenge this boundary.
“OK.”  I whispered back.
Dan was curious to know what had been said.
“Check online, later.”  I told him.
And here we are.

Last night Eden was singing and dancing on my bed while I read a book.  She wasn’t putting on a show, just doing her thing, so I wasn’t being a neglectful mother.  Some of her lyrics penetrated my brain and I looked up to catch her number as Mary, the mother of Jesus, singing about him,

“They took him and whipped him.
They whipped him 31 times.
And that’s not fuuuuuuuuun.
It huuuurt.”
Wow.
Eden’s musical styling could usually be described as “High School Musical meets praise music” but last night I think HSM met the Passion of Christ.

First Things

April 24, 2008 by Alison Hodgson 3 Comments

Eden and I have been reading “Little House in the Big Woods” before bed.  It is her first chapter book.  She wasn’t sure about it, but I enticed her with the few illustrations and we were off.  She is loving it and I am loving cuddling with her and sharing this wonderful story.  I was given this set the Christmas I was seven and devoured them.   I remember the feeling of lying on the dining room floor in a patch of sunlight reading and reading and reading,  feeling so rich to have so many books.
Tonight she was fresh from a bath and it was such a deep pleasure to sit quietly, her wet head on my shoulder, and read together.
