Mini Insomniac

March 19, 2008 by Alison Hodgson 4 Comments

This was taken several weeks ago, when Paul was out of town, right after my sister’s family returned from Vancouver.  I FOOLISHLY agreed to keep Rendini for a sleep over.  Number 1: a woman whose husband is on another continent should never add to the number of children under her care, especially, Number 2: one who is still on Pacific Time.

This photo was taken after midnight as Ren and I snuggled in for a sleepover.  The kid finally passed out around one.
But who could resist this sweet face?
“I’m happy I’m here.” She said while we were taking pictures.
“Oh, that’s a good one.” She said when we reviewed them.
I think so too.

Happy Tuesday

March 18, 2008 by Alison Hodgson 2 Comments

It is cold and grey.

When will some weather get the idea that it is Just. Not. Welcome.
Paul is sick.  This has not prevented him from going to work.  When I called him this morning he told me he was sweating.  I said this means he’s contagious and that, if I sent my children to school, I would not in this condition. He murmured something unintelligible and then we got off the phone. Aren’t you glad you’re not his co-worker.
We have the day off school as Lydia has her environmental school and Christopher has a class.
He is trying to instruct Eden on Super Mario Galaxy while jumping on the trampoline.  Whether or not they are allies today has not been established.  This is a topic of discussion almost every morning.  The alliances are constantly shifting.
I am doing a bit of laundry and a little pick up of the house, between kid runs.
It is quiet and a little dull, but I’m happy.

Lookie!

March 17, 2008 by Alison Hodgson 9 Comments

Saturday we decided to take a hike.  We chose a park near our home that we’ve never visited.  It is reputed to be a “dog’s paradise” so we brought along Jack.

Most of the trails meandered through the hilly woods.  Eden is not exactly an iron woman in the best circumstances and so, facing an icy incline,  she wasn’t thrilled.

Early on Christopher was perky and alert.  I think the fresh air was a shock to his system as he, temporarily, forgot to tease his sisters.

Never fear, he was soon back on his game, wrestling a stick away from Eden.  He had had it first, but her argument was that it was the perfect size.

She was not pleased.

We had a map and Lydia was happy to read it.  Please note the compass and whistle hanging around her neck.  Yes, I bought it for her, but never would have thought to bring it, let alone known where it was.

This was Eden’s new stick.  She was happy because it was twice as long as the one lost to her brother.  I didn’t take any pictures for a while, being too busy holding Eden’s hand and jollying her along the way.  All told we walked over an hour.

Back at the parking lot I was effusive about Eden’s strength in going soooo far and asked her to show her muscles.

I don’t know what she’s doing here.  I certainly didn’t request it, but we’ll call it a bonus.

A close up seemed prudent.

Lydia wanted to demonstrate her strength too.

Christopher was willing.

As was Paul.

Jack just wanted to get back in the van and have a little snooze.
You’ll have to take my word that I was there too.

For Real

March 16, 2008 by Alison Hodgson 4 Comments

Given my druthers I would have selected silver, but it was this or a metallic blue.  Regardless, it works and fits in my pocket.  And yes, we did buy the extended service plan.  It covers everything except for loss and theft.  As long as you have even a weensy portion of the camera, you can trot into Best Buy and get a replacement IMMEDIATELY.   Omitting the need to mail it anywhere guarantees we won’t go a year without a (handheld) camera ever again.

The end of an excellent run

March 15, 2008 by Alison Hodgson 4 Comments

“So I’m thinking about buying a camera.”  I mentioned to my wee niece, Willa.

“You mean the kind that doesn’t have a computer attached to it?”  She asked.
“Yes,”  I said, “the other kind is called a laptop, and the camera is sort of secondary.”
She had no idea.  “But how will you document our rich and loving relationship?”
I wasn’t sure.  “Maybe we could get someone to take our picture.”
She asked about rocking the boat and trying to fix something that ain’t broke.
I mentioned picture quality.
“Schmality!”  She squeaked.
Don’t tell her we took a trip to Best Buy today.
