Einstein’s Protege

March 17, 2006 by Alison Hodgson 6 Comments

Today when the sun came out Christopher shouted, “Hurray!”

For a moment I was touched that it meant as much to him as it did to me and then he said,

“Now I can do my experiment with my magnifying glass. I love to experiment!”

He has been trying to set things on fire.

Some glasses are half-full, some glasses are half-way to full…?

    Hey Alison,

Your intrepid firestarter is much like I was as a kiddo. I was a fan of the magnifying glass and harnessing the power of the sun. Giddy up! But…in a house with Mort, there were some important accessories which you came into play, and I think wisely. I actually put on welding goggles when I did this as a kid (no joke!). That intense beam of light is really, really, bright, and I believe it can do some eye damage if looked at for too long. I was doing an art project as a kid…a burnt wood sorta thingie, so it was a long run. But…Safety First! You may want to consider getting your intrepid little Einstein some cheapie welding safety glasses over at Harbor Freight, down on 28th Street, across from the old Roger’s Plaza, or swing by Home Depot and see what they might have. I don’t think that regular sunglasses are OK for extended periods of time. You need something with a bit more blocking power. Just a thought…

amberj and scott, yes, I know.

    Dan,

Thank you for the help. I certainly want C. Riley to be safe when he is starting things on fire…

Julia, I wouldn’t know. I did, watch some Smurfs in my day but I think a youngster, like you, probably watched more.
