Einstein’s Protege

March 17, 2006 by Alison Hodgson 6 Comments

Today when the sun came out Christopher shouted, “Hurray!”

For a moment I was touched that it meant as much to him as it did to me and then he said,

“Now I can do my experiment with my magnifying glass. I love to experiment!”

He has been trying to set things on fire.

“Two nights ago I dreamt I saw a tent full of kittens and they were meowing so sweetly…yup.”

Three Things Thursday

1. It was grey grey grey grey here today.

2. I spell grey, the English way, with an “e” rather than the American way with an “a”. With an “e” it seems greyer.

3. My name is spelled with one “l” which is the Scottish spelling, rather than the English which uses two.

Captain’s Blog

We are 2/3 of the way through the school year.

I still have two students and a tag-a-long and I still have a thick head of hair, despite somewhat constant tugging.

My kids are learning and so am I.

They could tell you quite a bit about American History, biology, grammar and math.

I can tell you that sometimes I’ve had to shift in order to catch my sufficiency of grace. Don’t get me wrong, I get it, but at times I have been looking the other way and it hits me in the head. Grace is grace. I am learning to watch for it, to expect it and to keep my arms open in order to get all of it so that I never run out.

I awoke around five this morning to the sound of something rubbing against glass. When I was fully conscious I only heard the rain and assumed I had imagined the other. And then began the scratching and whacking of some THING at the window. I shook Paul awake.

“What’s that?”

“I don’t know!”

We both crept to the window and pulled back the shade. A cat sized creature was prowling on the window sill. When its enormous tail came into view I whispered, “Is that a raccoon?”

It was. At that moment it leapt into the shrubs below and slunk across the grass back towards the woods that are behind our house.

Lying back in bed I told Paul. “I don’t know what I would have done if you hadn’t been here!”

“Then it’s a good thing I was, so you could think about what you could have done if you had been alone.”

Thus far I have come up with:

Wet self and hide under blankets

or

Run shrieking to call 911

I just don’t see myself pulling up the shade in any scenario.

Suggestions?
