A Fish Called Donald

November 12, 2007 by Alison Hodgson 15 Comments

On Halloween, Christopher won a fish and named him Donald. He died this evening. As you can imagine we are all very sad and Christopher is heartbroken. He would like to say a few things here about his fish.

“Donald was a great fish. I know he was a cute guy but the time had come for him to die. I used to tease him but now I didn’t since he died. And to Uncle Nathan and Uncle Tanner, I wanted Donald to live until Christmas so I could show you my fish. He was a kind of an amusing guy when I would watch him swim around and I would often blow bubbles in his tank with a small tube. I know I am very heartbroken to say that Donald has died.”

I know it can be so hard to know what to say in these situations, but any condolences would be greatly appreciated.

    Christopher,

I’m so sorry for the loss of Donald. I lost a goldfish when I was about your age too. It’s sad when we lose animals we care about.

    I’ll be thinking of you.

    Mr. Dan

    Hey Christopher,
I think that Donald was very lucky to have you as his friend, and I am sure that he was glad that you took so good care of him, you fed him, talk to him and washed his bowl (or your mum did), so I am certain, that even if he died too young, he appreciated your friendship.

Miss Ali, I haven’t seen your daughter for a long time, like for about 6 years. It’s kind of silly how big my head is in the painting by Niamh. So, thank you for making that kind note to me. That was sweet and I really appreciate it. Did you know that we now have a puppy? He’s about 10 months old and his name is Jack. Maybe you would like to meet him some day when we invite you over for swimming.

Thank you for your kind note, Miss Sunva. We looked on the map and found your islands. I was kind of surprised that they were so far. Well, it’s time for me to go bed and read some books. But first I need to say good night to Jack.

Ok, I am on my lunch break and looking for the funny story you promised.

Instead, I got nothing but a dead fish. Again.

    Chop, chop.

Yeah, I agree the dead fish has gotta go!
I think we’ve mourned Donald the fish long enough.

Oh I see, this space is all about your needs, huh ladies?!

So Christopher, shake off that sackcloth & those ashes, never mind your dear dead Donald, you’re done mourning. Or more accurately, we’re done mourning for you – move on.

Well that’s cold ladies, really cold.

On the other hand, it doesn’t take a dead fish long to start stinking.

My daughter has lost two dear fish this year. She shares in your sadness, and hopes to see your Donald swimming around with her Starme in the big fishbowl in heaven.

    Christopher,

Sorry for your loss. Donald must have been a very important fish so as to lie in state – was his last name Kennedy by any chance? I suppose not, if so, I imagine he would have survived with nothing more than a stiff neck and nothing lost except…say, did Donald have any smart looking young volunteers? No, not you, Eden!

Anyway, just so you know you’re not alone, I’ve lost fish myself in the last few years – Arturo and then Buddy. They were both honorable fish, as I’m sure Donald was, and it pains me to remember their last days…but it’s not good to dwell on that. Instead, we should remember them in their prime, right? Remember them peacefully blowing bubbles underwater – or, rather, remember blowing bubbles for them with McDonald’s soda straws when they didn’t blow enough themselves – the good times…

Well, we’ll have plenty of time to talk about how we’ve loved and lost fish over a case of juice boxes when I come home next month.

    I love you, young man.

    Uncle Nathan
