With PCs, you get more from your money, but with Macs, you get something slick and cool, and very aesthetically pleasing.
As a user of both, I think both operating systems work well, and I am still on the fence, wondering if I made the right choice to buy a Mac. The transition to Mac has been a frustrating one for me, but I’m beginning to come around.
I don’t believe I’ll ever be fully converted, fully Mac.
Get yourself the best deal possible would be my suggestion. And if you are going to buy a PC, wait until after January 30, 2007, when the new Microsoft Operating System will be available. Windows XP is five years old…dated. I would also look at consumer reports to see what PC companies make the most reliable, and solidly built hardware.
my brother just bought my mom a mac G4 (it hasn’t arrived yet) so with her moving in with us we will have both in our home. Will let you know how it goes if you have the time.
The style of the Mac is definitely attractive. And the fact that I am so low tech makes me think Mac is a good way to go too because they are allegedly more user friendly and I am practically a blank slate.
Dan, Dan, Dan – you’re killing me here. I’m going to have bring the smack down.
Rock-solid argument follows:
Mac, Mac, Mac, Mac, Mac, Mac, Mac. Mac. Mac, Mac.
As you can see, Alison, Macs are in a different class altogether.
Another plus with the Mac – no viruses or spyware to worry about.
Macs just work. You don’t have to download installation software with printers or digital cameras or whatever. Just plug it in and go.
If you’re crushing on the Mac, go with the Mac. Only the very thickest of us can’t get used to the platform. Oh! I’m sorry, Dan. ; ) And I believe the new MacBooks can run Windows as well (not than any sane person would want to do that).
Oh, and the best thing? Macs are way better.
Now I know Dan’s Mac has crashed on him quite a bit, but I still think that’s unusual. As far as my experience goes, they’re more reliable. (Other than having a can of Sprite poured over them.) And I think, though Dan could correct me here, Dan’s brothers would recommend a Mac for you as well.
Other than that, Dan’s advice is sound. Speaking of which, next year would be a good time to wait for a Mac as well – if you’re thinking about waiting. It’s usually when Mac upgrades its OS and its iLife. If you buy it now, just be aware that the current software would be “old” in a few months. Not a biggie for me, but it might be something to consider.
Either way, a laptop is wonderful for writing. I miss mine tremendously from time to time – taking My Precious outside and writing on beautiful fall days. Writing on trips and during vacations with family. [Bawling ensues.]
*sniff* *sniff*
Now, Sherry makes a fine point – but the key thing you need to know in making the transition from PC to Mac is to use the Apple/Command key instead of the Control key. *sniff* And drop-down windows will drop down without a right click after about .73 seconds.
Scott, thank you for your thoughtful commentary. I really want a word processor with internet access that I can store some photos on. I don’t need a lot of power so I am thinking about a used Mac. What do people think about that and I don’t want to wait. Would that be ridiculous?
Well, it’s sad to say, I am thick, but not in the way you infer…
Alison, if you want to mess around with my Mac sometime, I’d be more than happy to let you run it through it’s paces.
And Scott is correct–my brothers would lean you towards a Mac.
Since you’ve been using a PC for most of your life, you should take that into consideration. Despite how “intuitive” everyone says Macs are, they aren’t anymore intuitive than a PC. They’re intuitive to people who’ve used Macs for a lifetime, and you will undoubtedly find the transition frustrating, as I have.
However, you’ll have me to refer to, since I’ve been able to figure some of these things out by now, fixes for problems that will undoubtedly make you want to chuck the thing out the window in your first month of using it. There are still things that are irksome, but I’m just accepting them. (Unbelievable that I’d say something so heretical, ain’t it, Scott? Hurumph!)
Let me know if you want to come over and mess around on my Mac sometime.
my brother is a techno geek and a systems administrator at Univ of VA – the mac G4 laptop, is what he just bought my mom. It is due to arrive tomorrow. She is thinking of missing Ben’s birthday dinner to wait for it if it doesn’t come, she is so excited. She has never even looked at a mac before.
Soory this reply is a little late. My husband is a longtime Mac user.. and I just recently having had a formal introduction (two yr. relationship resulting) LOVE mine! I used a pc at work and wouldn’t go back. Feel free to email me and I will give you my phone # if you have any questions. Or – do you have it… nehoo just let me know if you have anymore questions!

Because you are not the most high tech girl in the world, I would suggest sticking to a platform you already know–PC.
But as a former Mac user, I must admit I still get Mac Envy from time to time–they are just so darn sexy.

Do tell.
Alison, check out an iBook G4 – all you’ll ever need (Powerful, but yesterday’s laptop – and it’s WiFi capable.)
That’s what I had. *sob*
Check out eBay. Also, Apple sells refurbished machines on their site.
I’m LOL over here, Scott.

Thought I would chime in… MAC!!! 🙂 I love mine!
Sandi,
Are you a long time Mac user?
my brother is a techno geek and a systems administrator at Univ of VA – the mac G4 laptop, is what he just bought my mom. It is due to arrive tomorrow. She is thinking of missing Ben’s birthday dinner to wait for it if it doesn’t come, she is so excited. She has never even looked at a mac before.

Well, Sandi, our tea date is terribly delayed. Do you have an upcoming shows to which I can come and stalk you? Or should we just get coffee?
