Kitten Killer: I am NOT a criminal

June 11, 2013 by Alison Hodgson Leave a Comment

Eden 2006

Today I’m pulling out a post from 2005 when Eden aka The Bean aka Beanie (and too many more nicknames to list) was two and a half. I realize I run the risk of re-opening charges against me, but I think it’s worth it.

The Bean is a very nurturing sort of girl. Out of nowhere, and I really mean nowhere, she can fashion a baby. She gets all quiet and soft and either cups her hands or crooks her arms to cradle – anything, I am talking paper clips, pieces of fuzz or nothing at all.

Yesterday Paul and I were painting the dining room ceiling and Beanie kept us company. She was being a kitten which involves lots of meowing, crawling and a good bit of licking or licking sounds. I looked over and she was on her side and her arms were circled in front of her. She had an earnest expression. I knew what was coming.

“I am the Mother kitten.”

“Oh really. What are your kittens’ names?”

“Uh…Kiko and Niko”

“Oh that’s nice, rather Japanese.”

I continued to paint and she continued to fawn on her imaginary offspring.

“Axcelly I had more kittens. I had five, but now I have two…You did it.”

“What?”

“You did it.”

“What did I do?”

“You died them.”

“I did not!”

“You did.”

“No, I didn’t…kill them.”

“You did…kill them.”

“I would never kill your kittens!”

“You did it.”

Fortunately, we were distracted from this interminible argument. Now we all know I did not die those three imaginary kittens, but if you think the mere accusation isn’t hanging heavy on my conscience, you’re crazy.

Chocolate, Sweets and Cycles

June 8, 2012 by Alison Hodgson 1 Comment

Today Eden stepped into the van and noticed an empty bag of a chocolate chips. “Who left this?” She asked as much as accused.

“Who do you think?” I said.

“Christopher.”

“He’s got quite a sweet tooth.” I said.

“I think he has that thing you told me about that girls and women, who are 11 to 50, get every month, where they want chocolate.”

“No, not that. He just craves sweets.” I said, trying not to laugh.

“I noticed that you said ‘Girls’ or ‘Women’ and not ‘People.’ Why is that?”

“It’s only women or girls who have what we were talking about.”

“Oh, well I think Rennie and Willa (cousins, 8 and 4 respectively) are going to crave candy.”

There was quiet for a moment as she thought.

“I’m more of a chocolate person, myself.”

Me too, Baby, me too.

Booties

April 7, 2012 by Alison Hodgson 1 Comment

Since Eden first got Oliver she has been wanting to get him some booties to wear. Yesterday I noticed that our local pet supply store had all their dog clothes marked way down, so we brought her back to check things out. I actually only saw coats and sweaters, but Eden found a little bag of booties right away, as well as a matching parka. Oliver has been needing one…apparently.
We emptied out the shopping cart full of sales clothes hunting for a parka in his size but no luck. We did score a little utility jacket, I kid you not.
We had been home about 30 seconds when Eden and Christopher were putting the booties on Oliver.

Sadly,  they were too big.  Eden slapped the jacket on him next and that was too small. We have decided to return everything tomorrow and bring Oliver with us to ensure the fit.

Valentine’s Day

February 14, 2012 by Alison Hodgson 1 Comment

I don’t remember much about Valentine’s Day last year.  In general it was a stressful time. The house was going up but insurance was dragging its heels to pay out a portion of the settlement that had been long negotiated. This meant the builders weren’t being paid which was so anxiety inducing for Paul and me. We had jumped through so many hoops to get the wreckage torn down, then even more to get the plans for the new house approved and now we were getting to make a thousand calls just to get money that was ours and should have been paid out weeks before.

The wheels were coming off with the kids too. Eden had been begging for months to homeschool . At her Valentines’ party I found out she had told everyone she was leaving after the party and that some of her friends had been sobbing in anticipation.

“It’s not going to happen.” I assured a couple of concerned mothers. Apparently Eden had offered for me to homeschool some of her friends too, as their mothers worked outside the home.

“It’s not going to happen,” I told the second grade wanna-be dropout. “Not this year. We’ll talk about next year once the house is finished.”

Valentine’s isn’t really a big thing for Paul and me, but I usually do something for the kids, (chocolates and a card or a special breakfast) and I think that’s important, especially as they get older.

I can’t even remember if Paul got me a present last year, but I do know he gave me a card.

I’ll be honest, it didn’t look promising. And then I opened it.
Please note the googly eyes to the right and below.

I’m sorry you don’t get the lovely effect of glancing at the crazy eyes and then reading the copy.

I loved that Paul characterized himself as happy during such a crap of a time.

We were children when we started dating.  I was in 9th grade and Paul was in 10th, the ages Lydia and Christopher are now. Paul’s dad took his own life a year later and it’s been up and down ever since.

So much has been taken from us but, at the end of the day if all we have is each other and the kids, we’ve been given so much.

Yesterday in church, I found this note, recorded from last year, in my notebook:

“I like to sing. It’s fun” Eden said to Christopher.

“It would be better if there were disco balls.” He’s never one to keep a good thing from getting better.

“Oh yeah! If they were pink and purple!”

They would have had a great time at the first Pentecost.
