Hobbies:
1. Reading – it’s actually an addiction but instead of waking in a pool of vomit I have a decent vocabulary and am a good speller so society doesn’t frown.
2. Gardening – I started when we bought our house which was surrounded by excessive shrubbery or nothing at all. Soon after I was walking through a difficult pregnancy with our second Little Surprise and we were beginning the identification process of our first Little Surprise’s deafness. I felt completely out of control of most things, but no plant could escape me and my shovel.
3. Blogging – nuff said.

You have reminded me to play! I’d forgotten lately.
I think all three of these hobbies are very constructive. Reading and gardening…it doesn’t get much better for those who enjoy those things.
For me, reading, a good book is not only soothing but mind-changing, often.

First point – hilarious. Hello, My name is Scott.
Second point – fascinating how getting our hands dirty can sometimes save our souls.
Third point – don’t understand what you’re talking about here.

Love number one.
Our poor children. There is no hope for them, is there? We are intentionally grooming them to be addicts, simply because it serves to justify our own sickness.
But as you said, this one is much more socially acceptable.
My kids and I are halfway through a wonderful new high seas pirate adventure called Peter and the Starcatchers by Dave Barry (yes, the humorist) and his colleague, Ridley. It is intended to serve as the prequel to J.M. Barrie’s Peter Pan. We are all loving it–even the visiting grandparents look forward to the nightly reading.
Last night, we read five chapters out at the firepit in the yard, our fingers still sticky from s’mores. For the last two chapters, I had to have my son hold a flashlight for me, but no one wanted to stop.
The book is absolutely wonderful. We’ve just discovered that the sequel (prequel, part two) comes out in July. The kids are virtually drooling in anticipation.
